Borsch, Vodka & Tears

Wednesday night is the night if you’ve decided you want a full-blown taste of Poland: Polish blintzes, dumplings, vodka flowing and live music.  As soon as you step foot inside this restaurant you’re in another world: dark and moody (like a good rye bread) and brimming with the smells of freshly cooked comfort food, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d just stepped out of a snowy Krakow streetscape and into the bowels of a warm, cozy den where the food is served by your Babushka…

This is one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne. It’s not a cheap night out (especially when you have a voracious appetite for all things Eastern European, most notably the vodka) but you can reasonably expect to walk out of here absolutely stuffed to the gunnels. And that’s precisely what your Babushka wants. (I know fattening me up is one of the key goals of mine).

Bokchoy Tang

Don’t come here on a date. We were here to have a light Chinese dinner before heading out into town and there was a couple sitting next to us looking more uncomfortable with the place than with each other, which is saying something. Bokchoy Tang is never busy, which is confusing, because it has alright food and is located right inside the tourist drawcard that is Federation Square.


I’m not saying Bokchoy Tang is bad. In fact, it’s one of the easiest places to get good quality Chinese food any night of the week when you’re on your way to something in Fed Square or at the Arts Centre. In fact, it’s my go-to spot before the ballet.  But being easy doesn’t necessarily equate to value for money or the best Chinese dining in town. I often come away feeling a little underwhelmed and a bit too much lighter in the pockets.

I missed you, MissChu

Terrible pun. But I did! I hadn’t been to MissChu for a while and that’s some sort of crime, given that I’m only a 5-10 minute walk away. It’s a long-time favourite of my dear friend S and is up her end of town, so we popped down for the lunchtime rush last week.

MissChu do very fresh, delicious Vietnamese food which you can have in (they have tables out the front and also inside down the side of the restaurant, but not much sitting space! You may have to share or sit at the long bar that runs the length of the kitchen) or you can even take away. Yes, THEY EVEN DELIVER. So now you understand – I should be eating MissChu every week.
